Black Beauty & Style: A History of Fashion : Donyale Luna

By FashionRevo08 · February 9, 2010 · 1 Comment · 22 Views

Many readers of the blog often ask, who is the gorgeous woman featured in the background of the blog? Today I answer that question.

Donyale Luna (1945-1979)

In 1966, Donyale Luna became the first African American model to appear on the cover of Vogue magazine, a photograph in which she covered her whole face with her hand, except for her boldly outlined eye. Reportedly, that shot was chosen so as to not offend the magazine’s regular readership.

She was born Peggy Ann Freeman in Detroit, with an abusive father who was murdered when she was 18. Her mother encouraged her to become a nurse. A relative once described her as being “a very weird child, even from birth, living in a wonderland, a dream.” Donyale Luna created her own dream. She made up a story to hide her painful upbringing, denied the reality revealed on her birth certificate and claimed that her biological father’s last name was Luna, and her mother was Mexican. Her grandmother became an Irishwoman who married a black interior decorator.

She was discovered by photographer David McCabe, and left Detroit behind for the lights of New York City. From all accounts, her rise was meteoric. A sketch of her appeared on the cover of Harper’s Bazaar in 1965, and Richard Avedon signed an exclusive contract to photograph her.

During the late sixties and early seventies, Luna appeared in several films produced by Andy Warhol (including "Camp") and Federico Fellini ("Fellini Satyricon"). She also appeared in "The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus," the Otto Preminger comedy "Skidoo" (in which she was featured as the mistress of God, who was portrayed by Groucho Marx), and the British documentary "Tonite Let's All Make Love in London". Salvador Dalí considered her one of his favorite models.

Time Magazine published an article about her, titled The Luna Year. The article already reveals the trouble she was already beginning to encounter: “A month after hitting New York, she married a young actor, divorced him after ten months, and now will not even give his name. “I love New York,” she says. “But there were bad things. People were on drugs or hung up on pot. There was homosexuality and lesbianism and people who liked to hurt.” Unhappy with that world but unwilling to give it all up and head back to Detroit, she fled to London and Paris.” "Back in Detroit I wasn't considered beautiful or anything, but here I'm different," Luna explained of her success. "They were looking for a new kind of model, a girl who is beautiful like you've never seen before."

Luna appeared in a nude photo layout in the April 1975 issue of Playboy; the photographer was Luigi Cazzaniga. Luna married the Italian photographer Luigi Cazzaniga. In 1977 they had a child: Dream Cazzaniga.

Donyale Luna died in 1979, of an accidental pill overdose in Rome. She was just 33 years old

Saddle em' up!

By FashionRevo08 · February 8, 2010 · 3 Comments · 46 Views

(top)Sears catalog 1941 (bottom)Wesleyan College Student 1938

Did you know that saddle shoes were back? They have been creeping through the stores slowly but surely. Oh how I used to love my saddle shoes, I would clean them with a little towel everyday before going to school. I hated to see dirty saddle shoes, although at times it seemed like it was a kind of "en-vogue" thing to do, if they reached to the point of no return - I begged for a new pair. Now they are back... but the real question is, how do you wear these now as an adult and get away with them?

I'll show you!

Day 1.
It's a casual day, but you want to look about something, and you have decided to forgo heels for the day. Here is a cool option: Find a cute graphic tee, a vest, casual slouch pants and coordinating accessories to complete your look. Also I vote that the pants are rolled per the picture!!

Bob Marley Wanna Love Ya Dark Pink Babydoll TShirt - Wear Your Beer, $13
DURAS ambient T-shirt Vest (Gray), $76
Arthur Pant: Buy Alice + Olivia Clothing, $275
Bass 'Enfield' Oxford (Women), $69
Stone Bow Stud Earrings, 8 GBP

Day 2.
So maybe its casual Fridays at work, and you want to switch things up a bit. Here's a great look, a sweater with rhinestone detail, button down blouse, khakis (this screams WORK, the saddles shouldn't take them by alarm) and a very cute cross-body bag. Chanel studs, and a black and gold zippered bracelet complete this looks (so yes it screams WORK, but the small details of the accessories and the shoes, scream your own personal style)

Forever21.com -Sweater, $30
tuxedo blouse, $18
Women's Plus: Women's Plus Tab-Front Perfect Khakis - Khaki, $13
Bass 'Enfield' Oxford (Women), $69
L.A.M.B. - Dorset Lambert (Sterling) - Bags and Luggage, $290

Day 3
The Beau want's to get in on the action as well!! Well we don't disappoint - check out this Manstyle. Keeping it simple for the guy, we paired it with a nice argyle sweater, his basic white tee,  light denim jeans (i love the contrast of the dark sweater and light colored denim) and a nice watch. Check the footwork, its a nice sneaker version of the saddle shoe.

Black Beauty & Style: A History of Fashion: Willi Smith

By FashionRevo08 · February 3, 2010 · 1 Comment · 43 Views

In honor of Black History Month, I will be featuring influential Blacks in fashion. I will feature journalist, models, photographers, and designers. If you have anyone that you would like to see them  featured in 'Black Beauty & Style; A History of Fashion", please feel free to email @ fashionrevolutionaires@gmail.com or suggest in the Comment Box.

Willi Smith (1948-1987)

Born Willi Donnell Smith, February 29, 1948, in Philadelphia, PA; died of pneumonia, April 17, 1987, in New York, NY; son of Willie Lee (an ironworker) and June Eileen (a homemaker; maiden name, Bush) Smith.
Smith studied commercial art at Mastbaum Technical High School and attended Philadelphia College of Art for Fashion Illustration. Smith then moved to New York to attend Parsons School of Design.

Smith rose quickly in the fashion world to become one of the industry's most successful young designers, Willi Smith was part of a vanguard of hip young black designers who first made their mark in the late 1960s. The sportswear he created for WilliWear Ltd. in the 1970s and 1980s was noted for its relaxed, street-smart, and often oversized look that made it functional but fun.

"I don't design clothes for the Queen, but for the people who wave at her as she goes by" said Smith, according to the New York Times.
In 1967, Smith quit Parsons to pursue a career designing on his own. In 1969 he designed a label for Digits, a sportswear company. In 1973, Smith, along with his sister Toukie Smith (many of you may remember her as Eva Rawley on 227), founded their own clothing company that soon failed. Smith continued to design and in 1976 he went into business with Laurie Mallet and called the company "Williwear."

He designed the wedding dress worn by  Mary Jane Watson when she married Peter Parker in the Spider-Man comic book and comic strip in 1987, as well as designing the suits for Edwin Schlossberg and his groomsmen when he married Caroline Kennedy in 1986. Smith also designed the uniforms for the workers on Christ's 1985 wrapping of the Pont Neuf bridge in Paris and designed wardrobe for the cast of Spike Lee's film School Daze in 1987.

New York Daily News fashion writer Liz Rittersporn declared upon his death in 1987, that he was "the most successful black designer in fashion history." Smith chafed at the attention given to the anomaly of his being a black designer, yet he acknowledged some advantages in the sensibility of being an African-American: "Being black has a lot to do with my being a good designer. My eye will go quicker to what a pimp is wearing than to someone in a gray suit and tie. Most of these designers who have to run to Paris for color and fabric combinations should go to church on Sunday in Harlem. It's all right there."
In 1996 WilliWear was relaunched. Available exclusively at T.J. Maxx stores, the new lines were produced by designer Michael Shulman.

Spring into the Winter!

By FashionRevo08 · February 2, 2010 · 3 Comments · 39 Views

This weather has been working on the last nerves of everyone here lately. One day sunny and mild, the next frigid and overnight freeze warnings. Do you think the world of fashion and retail cares about mother nature? Negative! They have to keep it moving, and the schedule can't be changed. I'm sure you have noticed the nice "Spring" items in your local stores and boutiques, but with this crazy weather its sure to get some a little confused. Today, I will show you how to rock your Spring clothes in the Winter.

The key is LAYER, LAYER, LAYER!

First up, the floral sundress, there are many options out there, you can go short, maxi or mid-length. This look features a mid-length sundress by Gabriella Rocha. Here a cream cardigan, black tights and knee-boots were added to winterize this look, a chunky scarf completes it.

Gabriella Rocha Xanti - $80

Steven by Steve Madden "Iden" Tall Boots $140

80 Denier Opaque $13

Ribbed Cardigan Sweater $39

You think you can't wear shorts in the Winter??? NONSENSE, matter of fact this is the PERFECT time to wear shorts, especially for those who are normally very shy about showing their legs. The invention of the tights were one the best ideas around, they hide flaws, scars, marks, jiggles, and wiggles. I go even farther with this look by adding a pair of funky thigh high socks. Let's check it out!

Dark Ripped Baggy Shorts $45

Vanessa Bruno Athe Wool-blend turtleneck sweater $105

ASOS Grey Marl Tight $6.80

Pattern Pal Socks $20

Pelle Moda Deluca Bootie - Black $160

Lastly, but not least is the forever lasting tank top. Seriously, I just don't think this has any weather limitations, and there are so many styles, and options you cant go wrong. I chose a floral tank top. Why? Floral is big this season (yes, once again). I paired it with a chunky brown cardigan, denim patch jeans (another trend for Spring), and caramel brown leather boots.

Belted Shawl Cardigan $25

Gap Real straight patch jeans $80

Daytrip Floral Chiffon Tank Top $19

Thirty items for your Thirties

By FashionRevo08 · January 25, 2010 · 5 Comments · 80 Views

Thirty for the thirties…

Happy New Year!! It's 2010 - wow where did the years go?? Well anyway, its finally time to start really building your wardrobe, especially during these dark economic times. So, with this blog, I decided to veer off a little and focus on basic key pieces.

I know you have come across many list of must haves, then ten items that every woman must own, the items you have to have obtain before you die (this is a joke), and the list goes on and on! In my opinion there are actually thirty key pieces that every woman must acquire during her 30’s. I chose the 30's because simply Im in my 30's, but I feel the majority of the list can be acquired and worn by women of all ages. Now please don’t run out and buy everything at once, these are items that should be accumulated over the years. I am all about trends, however, classic key pieces has and will always be the BASIS of fashion. –So with that said here are my must have thirty items for your thirties.

Clothing

  • 1. Dark Colored fitted Blazer - boring you think? I beg to differ, it all depends on how you rock it.
  • 2. White fitted shirt – long, short. sleeveless, scoop neck or a V,  (it would be really ideal to have all the styles I listed).
  • 3. Pencil skirt – this skirt is flattering for EVERY figure, it is a MUST
  • 4. Oxford shirt - you can dress this up, or dress it down
  • 5. Little Black Dress – just a no brainer
  • 6. Dark Denim Trousers - for one they are very slimming and are classic
  • 7. Wow Top - any blouse that will add the WOW factor to something simple
  • 8. Cardigan - great transitional piece, and of course wonderful for layering
  • 9. Skinny Jean or Slim Jean - shows off the figure and you can take them from day to night

So here is your basic blueprint, I chose to go with very basic colors just to show the versatility of the clothing. Of course I encourage you to play with colors, and fabrics, but this clean slate here can help ANYONE (even the fashionably challenged) build up their wardrobe.

Outerwear – I think this is an area that is largely missed by a great deal of people. Great outerwear is a must for your 30s. Trust me you are being JUDGED!

  • 10. Trench Coat
  • 11. Pea Coat
  • 12. Cape

Purses and handbags

  • 13. Everyday black leather bag - this is DEFINITELY a no brainer, so no picture
  • 14. Animal print - its classic, really it is it manages to make a debut EVERY decade so indulge, I promise you will get use out of it
  • 15. Bright colored purse or clutch - a great way to add flair to an outfit

Shoes, boots and other footwear

  • 16. Knee Boots – whether flat or heeled
  • 17. Patent leather - another staple, its always in style
  • 18. Stylish sport shoe – my go to pair are chuck taylors, they go with anything, they are cute, and come in a variety of colors
  • 19. A fitness sneaker – why? Because in your 30’s that metabolism is slowing, - plus it’s a glaring reminder to go to the gym!
  • 20. Basic Black pump - No brainer
  • 21. The Wow shoe – rhinestones, multicolored, etc.

Accessories

  • 22. Pearl – long, short, skinny or small – timeless, classic and SCREAMS “I AM WOMAN, HEAR ME ROAR”
  • 23. Colorful or patterned scarf
  • 24. A brooch – sounds old school, but its not, plus you can really get creative, and it’s a great piece to WOW an outfit
  • 25. Diamond earrings – (yes a real pair and please CONFLICT FREE)
  • 26. Tortoise frame sunglasses – why tortoise and not black.. this print ABSOLUTELY goes with everything, with black you are            restricted – tortoise not a chance
  • 27. Large Wide belt - very slimming and it adds an extra UMMPH to an otherwise boring outfit
  • 28. Fedora style hat - fashionistas are always stylish and put together with bad hair days

Bonus Items: - Like the Pointer Sisters said "She works hard for the money", so why not treat yourself for once (or twice)

  • 29. Insanely expensive pair of shoes
  • 30. Insanely expensive purse

Honorable Mention - an accessory that goes underneath it all

*****Shapewear - Spanx, Body Magic, choose your posion but you definitely need one (or many)*******

Nothing to wear you say?? Look at the 30 items above - u can EASILY create 10 outfits and MORE – lets take a look. Here are TEN combinations - YOU just can't beat that

8.

9.

10.

As you can see, the combinations are unlimited! These basic items can carry easily into the next decade - the key is to build on your basic wardrobe and add trendy pieces as needed.

Now tell me what do you think are the MUST HAVE ITEMS for every woman.

P.S. I'm back, sorry folks I just wasn't inspired by the world of fashion, however with the new decade upon us, I may not be inspired so much with current fashion but I will keep you looking good!

Until next time....

Toodles!

Leggings....... Oh My, Oh My!

By FashionRevo08 · October 13, 2009 · 1 Comment · 62 Views

Ok so as we can see, leggings aren't going anywhere, they just aren't, so how about we finally learn how to rock them right!

This is an example of what not to do with leggings - its just not classy, and the butt injections just don't help the cause. I'm just not big on wearing leggings with short shirts, short jackets, etc. If you are, more power to you just not my thing. It's like saying "HEY MY AZZ IS ON DISPLAY" , unless you are advertising for your performance at the strip club, or you are an up and coming female rapper (whose going for a certain IMAGE), or headed to your man's for a late night rendevous, I just don't see this look as really necessary for a night out.

I came up with the three great options!!!

Great for a date night - don't be scared to wear all black (remember is the new thing lol!) add a pop of color with your shoes, and BAM! This look is also great for our more BODACIOUS and BUSTY revolutionaires. Don't be afraid to rock the leggings, just make sure you do them right!

This is a more casual look, but still cute nonetheless, I paired the leggings with over-the knee boots, a cute and colorful (but fall appropriate) cardigan and some nice accessories.

This is my fave look, Im diggin' the sequined leggings, I paired those with a tuxedo style blazer a simple white long tank and some KILLER platforms! Throw in some bright earrings and a unique piece around your kneck and you are done!

Even the beauty industry decided to jump on this "trend", Check out the new collection at MAC Cosmetics "Style Black". It features, lipstick, eye crayons, nail polish and lots more.

What do you think of this look??

Put your jacket on, its cold outside!

By FashionRevo08 · September 30, 2009 · 0 Comments · 57 Views

I know during this time of year its always kind of difficult to dress appropriately for the weather. It's not cold enough to wear wool and heavy down coats, however it is a bit nippy and a jacket is required. I know sometimes its hard to come across cute and stylish jackets, however I did some browsing and came across some really cute pieces!

Good thing about these are you can also find most of them in store!

I suck and I know it! :0(

By FashionRevo08 · September 22, 2009 · 1 Comment · 39 Views

I've just been sooo busy, and honestly havent been to inspired to write one thing. Blogging is really one of the hardest things to do, because if your not feeling it - boy you could go days with a BLANK page, and disappoint alot of people. As I have, and of course no one told me I had to do this blog, I did and I love it (most days) but after recruiting readers, etc. I owe it to you to produce something.

So hear goes!

I know I was supposed to finish the rest of the top trends for fall, and I will TODAY - being that today is OFFICIALLY the 1st day of fall! If you are wondering if  I am too late, umm no you still are on top of it! Just jump right in and make sure to buy one of the following.

So no pics, no outfits, just straight up talk!!

Big Shoulder Jackets - and you all thought Beyonce was out of her mind sporting what seemed like countless outfits with shoulder pads. Well she was actually ahead of the game (1st time for everything right?) big shoulders are in. Look at it this way, big shoulders automatically makes the waist appear smaller! That has to count for something right????

Gloves - to be more specific, long fingerless gloves - this is actually one of my favorite trends this season, there are some DOPE styles out there right now. If you know me personally (yes you will probably see me in them a time or two)!

Short Velvet Dresses - hmmmm not so much for me, however if you like velvet and you like short dresses - here's a perfect match. If you are like me, and wondering what the hell the Fashion Mafia  were thinking, don't be surprised when you notice these in your local boutiques.

Fur Stoles - Yes, you too can look a real Manhattan Socialite, however I would warn you against getting the "real" thing. You don't want any problems with P.E.T.A..

Head to monotone - as much as I hate to be matchy matchy, I'm digging this look! Why? Because your can rock the HELL out of it, and look very fashionable. I'm digging layering different shades of greys, blues, and purples! Ooooh sounds nice huh?

Blanket Coats - think Snuggies but a lil more fashionable! (Not feeling it huh?) yeah me either LOL!

Lace-Ankle Booties - So 80's! So Madonna! So loving it!! There are some FIERCE booties out there! JUMP ON THEM.....

Over-the knee Boots - and yes it is very specific, not just knee boots but OVER THE KNEE! *Disclaimer* I am an eternal hater of knee boots, over the knee, whatever you want to call them. I am representing for the big leg girls (like Alicia holds us down) and I just can't rock them, calves are just too damn big. But for all you skinny leg chicks that can - check them out, they are out there and DEEP

Black is the new Black - so black is back apparently, personally I'd like to think it never goes out of style! However, its just not enough to wear a black dress, no when I am talking about black is back, I'm talking about giving you FULL Black. Black dress, black tights (tights which are big this fall as well, prints, solids, plaids), black shoes, black handbag, black accessories FULL BLACK!

There you have it Revolutionaires, of course I didn't hit on all of them, there are really just too many to name! If you have any you want featured or need outfit ideas, hit me up here on the blog or email me at fashionrevolutionaires@gmail.com

until next time Revolutionaires..................
